As the fall season begins, so does the pumpkin craze — there’s pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin cupcakes, pumpkin soup, pumpkin beer and much more. For a dedicated group of farmers, the best thing about pumpkins, however, is the size. Visitors to the annual Pumpkin Festival will get a chance to see the fruits of those farmers’ labor at the Great Pumpkin Weigh Off.“These things can grow from 20, 30 to over 40 pounds per day,” explained Sam Lovelace, owner and president of the North Carolina Giant Vegetable Growers Association and second-place winner in last year’s pumpkin weigh off. “There is nothing on this earth that grows as fast as a giant pumpkin.”
