Wilkes art classes slated

The Wilkes Art Gallery has announced a new line-up of classes scheduled for this spring.

Three pottery classes are planned, including Ceramic Hand Building with artist Rick Brake on Mondays from Feb. 27 through April 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. Cost is $110 for members and $120 for non-members. In this class, students will learn the fundamental of working with hump molds and slab construction to make functional and artistic pots, or spring garden sculptures. No prior experience in clay is necessary.

Skills Clay Class with artist Rick Brake will be held Mondays Feb. 27 through April 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $110 for members and $120 for non-members. This class is for those who want to improve their throwing skills.

Requirements include being able to consistently center; being able to throw a 6-inch cylinder; and being willing to practice at least one extra session per week at home or at a studio. This class is structured with specific assignments designed to improve the student’s clay skills from centering to glazing.

The third class is the Thursday Afternoon Open Clay with artist Rick Brake from Feb. 23 through March 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. Cost is $110 for members and $120 for non-members.

This will be a floating class for wheel and hand build students and is open to all levels: beginner through advanced. Spend two hours of student’s choice in the class between 4 and 8 p.m. Clay is not included. Clay will be on site at a cost of $17 per 25-pound bag. Also, two paint classes are planned, including Intermediate Watercolor with artist Nancy Canter each Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23 through March 30. Cost is $100 for members and $110 for non-members.

This watercolor class will focus on use of color and values in a painting. Emphasis will be on a step-by-step approach in developing composition with these elements. Bring a photo as inspiration or choose one from Nancy’s collection. Subjects will include florals, still life, and some introduction to abstract.

“The Art of Inspiration” will be taught by instructor Kitty Owens on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Feb. 28 through April 4. The Feb. 28 class is free, a discover class. Those interested can sign up for the next five classes for $50. The class will include meditation, breathing practices, artistic inspiration, gentle yoga poses and restorative relaxation. No yoga or artistic experience needed. Bring yoga pad or blanket, strap or bathrobe belt, drawing pad or notebook, pencils or pens (or use colored pencils).
