The annual rummage sale for The Ark, Elkin's homeless shelter, is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 9.

"The sale will be held at the same location as last year, the old White Swan Laundry building on U. S. 268, beside the Mov-N-Rent storage building facility," Renee Guizzetti, coordinator of this year's sale said. "We began taking donations this past Saturday and will continue for the next four Saturday's from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m."

The annual sale is a very popular event every fall in Elkin as hundreds of residents purchase items that benefit the residents of The Ark.

"We are asking for donations of just about anything," Guizzetti said. "There are a few items we don't accept such as any hazardous materials, propane tanks and paint, and we only accept clothing that is clean for children sizes infant to 5T. We also ask that any appliances donated must be in good working order.

"We are asking that if anyone has any spare time and would like to volunteer a couple hours helping to sort and price items prior to the sale, we would be very appreciative of their help," she said. "If anyone is cleaning out their closets, basements or garages, we hope they will think of us and donate those items to The Ark. The Ark is in need of funds and this annual sale is a large part of the annual funding."

Guizzetti also said that if anyone has large items such as furniture or appliances that they need help in getting to the sale, there are pick-ups available. Also, anyone who is handicapped or elderly and needs help getting items to the sale can contact The Ark to arrange for someone to come out and pick up the donations.

The Ark is the facility run by ECHO Ministries which provides temporary housing, guidance, meals and transportation to and from employment opportunities and medical needs for residents. Area residents who have found themselves homeless through the loss of employment or domestic situations can seek shelter through The Ark. The facility houses single women or women with children who need a step-up in situation. Single men are not permitted.

The sale hours are 4 - 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, and 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9. At noon, the sale will close for one hour while organizers straighten the remainder of items. The sale will then reopen from 1 - 3 p.m. for a $5 bag sale.

"When we reopen, customers will be allowed to fill a 13-gallon bag with anything they can fit into it for $5," Guizzetti said. "While customers are waiting for the sale to reopen, they can visit our food vendor, new this year. Sam's Great Dogs will be on hand to sale hotdogs and drinks during the sale on Friday and Saturday. We're excited to have this vendor on site to offer customers an option for a meal."

Anyone with questions or pick-up request may call The Ark at 336-527-1637.
