TRIBUNE/Chris Siers Elkin’s Kaylee Brown returns a volley against her singles opponent Anyssa Terrell. Brown shut Terrell out, winning 6-0, 6-0. Brown, however, didn’t compete in doubles action. Her absence in the doubles line up gave seniors a chance to play on Elkin’s senior day.
Elkin vs. West Wilkes

Despite Elkin's current tennis court construction, the Elkin Women's Tennis team gave a strong showing during their senior day yesterday afternoon. The Elks swept the Blackhawks 9-0.

Kaylee Brown continued her undefeated streak against Anyssa Terrell, winning 6-0, 6-0. Ashley Reece shut down her singles opponent, Laiken Price 6-0, 6-0. Emma White also had a shutout singles match, beating Vicky Watts 6-0, 6-0. Esther Neumark faced Holly Whittington in her singles match and, like the other top six members, shut out her opponent Holly Whittington, 6-0, 6-0.Rounding out the top six for singles were Sarah Gwyn and Mary Tayloe, who both shut out their opponents. Gwyn beat Madeleine Angaraita 6-0, 6-0 and Tayloe defeated Abby Smithey 6-0, 6-0.

The Elks mixed things up a bit during doubles competition, allowing seniors to play in lieu of underclassmen. Emma White and Sarah Gwyn paired up as normal for their doubles match, and easily defeated Terrell and Watts 8-0. Seniors Taylor Luffman and Seless Neese teamed up and beat Laiken Price and Holly Whittington, 8-4.

The final scoring doubles match paired Elk seniors Taylor Shore and Tori Blackburn against Angaraita and Smith. The Elkin duo took beat their opponents 8-1.

The Elks improve their record to 9-0 for the 2010 season and will travel to North Wilkes tomorrow.

East Wilkes vs. Alleghany

The Cardinals hosted the Alleghany Trojans yesterday afternoon in Ronda. The Cardinals swept Trojans 9-0.

Audrianna Bauguess shut out her singles opponent Emily Andrews 6-0, 6-0. Rachael Greene faced Haley Spurlin and beat her 6-1, 6-2.

Meredith Nance flew by Molly Andrews 6-0, 6-1, while teammate Kelly Johnson defeated Kallie Dalton 6-1, 6-1.

Hannah Brown and Mary Garris rounded out the singles competition for the Cardinals. Brown beat Julia Wood 6-0, 6-1 and Garris beat Lydia Garcia 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles action, Bauguess and Garris teamed up and shut out Andrews and Dalton 8-0.

Nance and Brown beat Spurlin and M. Andrews 8-2.

Rounding out the doubles matches for the Cardinals were Kayla Martin and Cherae Ferguson also shut out their opponents Wood and Garcia 8-0.

With the win, the Cardinals move to 7-1 for the 2010 season.

They will travel to in-county rivals Wilkes Central tomorrow, with the match beginning at 4 p.m.
