Beginning on Friday, Sept. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 5, the Old-Time Fiddlers Convention will take place at the Jones Farm on U. S. 268, northeast of Lenoir, in Happy Valley. Gates will open at 5 p.m. on Friday, 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday. Friday and Sunday gates are free. Saturday's gates are $5 in advance; $10 gate. Children 12 and under are admitted free.

Activities for children will include storytelling, hay rides and a duck derby.

For those who are familiar with the old folk song “Tom Dooley” describing the 1866 murder of Wilkes County resident Laura Foster, by her neighbor, Tom Dooley, they will find many variables in the story. Visitors and residents are drawn to the Fiddlers Convention during Labor Day weekend in the mountains of North Carolina. The Jones Farm is also reportedly the final resting place of Foster.

Kickoff of the weekend begins at 7 p.m. on Friday with an old-fashioned community dance. Square dancing and flatfoot jigs are the rage at the convention. A informal jam session in and around the campground area will end the evening.

Saturday's events will include a music competition with preliminary judging beginning at 10:30 a.m. The preliminary competition for old-time bands and bluegrass bands will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. The top three finalist in all categories will begin their competition at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.
Other activities visitors may be interested in include instrument making. Skilled craftsmen will display their work along with providing information on crafting an instrument and playing it.

On Sunday beginning at 10 a.m., local talent and guest performers will take the stage to provide free concerts. Donations will be welcome if attending on Sunday.
Visitors wishing to camp through the Fiddlers Convention, rustic camping, No water or electric in campground, is available for $10 per night in addition to admission to the convention. Campers should not arrive until after noon on Friday.

Alcohol is not allowed on the grounds.
