"As I told them (the team) it feels good to get a win," said Elkin Coach Joe McCulloch.
Within four minutes of the game's start, Elkin already found the back of the net, twice. Alejandro Sanchez put the Elks on the board at 37:10 with a score.
Just a short 30 seconds later, Jesus Pinzon would laser a shot passed East Wilkes goalkeeper Chris Deal, scoring at 36:20.
After the first two goals, Elkin's intensity fell off a bit, but still would score again before the half. Just under 23 minutes in the first half, Pinzon planted another shot in the back of East's net.
"As I told the team at halftime, we gave them all the excitement and the comeback material," said McCulloch.
Just before halftime, the Cardinals were able to attack the Elk goal on several runs, two of which resulted in goals.
The first goal came at 12:40 by senior Dakota Cabe.
Just 40 seconds before the first goal, Cabe led an offensive that nearly resulted in his scoring a goal. Elkin goalkeeper Jesus Rivera ended up blocking the shot, and clearing the ball to midfield.
Cabe would again, come up with the ball and lead another charge at the Elkin goal, and this time, he blasted a shot which found the back of the net.
"We really picked up the momentum, and I'm very proud of the boys and the way they rallied back after being down 0-3," said East Wilkes coach Kathryn Murchison.
Cabe, again, would score a short three minutes later, which closed the gap on the scoreboard 3-2.
"The boys regrouped on the field and made some changes and really came back. Both of those goals by Cabe were excellent goals, he followed through and really hustled. We thought he was going to get a third there just before the half too," Murchison said.
During the second half, the Cardinals kept pace with the Elks, and held them off for nearly 16 minutes with no goal. Elkin's Aidan McRitchie would break the scoring silence at 24:10, giving Elkin the advantage 4-2. "After they (Elkin) got the fourth goal in the second half, we lost a little momentum ," said Murchison.
Elkin would finalize their win with two more goals, the first of which coming off the toe of Alejandro Sanchez at 18:20, and second by Jose Rojas with an assist by Rigsbee Smith just before the end of the game.
"We've got scoring threats, we just have to find the windows to shoot," said McCulloch.
Cardinal goalkeeper Chris Deal gave an all-star showing during the match. Deal stepped up and made well over 10 saves, one of which coming on a penalty kick just before the end of the first half.
"To give up the penalty kick on the infraction, after they fought back and got so close, and to have Chris Deal make that stop and get it cleared, really helped to keep that momentum," said Murchison.
With the win, Elkin moves to 1-2-1, and will face Ashe County at home tomorrow, with the J.V. match beginning at 5:15 and varsity following at 7 p.m.
East Wilkes will travel to Boonville to face Starmount this evening for their game. Starmount suffered their first loss last night against Forbush.
The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
