North Surry showed up Friday night ready to play their game, and they played it down to the wire. The Elks were edged by the Greyhounds 27-21.

Joston Phipps highlighted the game with a breakaway, 74 yard TD run to start the game off.

Elkin responded soon after with strong drive which was capped off with an Ethan Creed one-yard TD run.

After the first two scores, the tempo of the game slowed a bit, partially due to turnovers and penalties against both teams.

Just four plays into the second quarter, Elkin forced a fumble on a North Surry completed pass.

During the punt attempt, flags were thrown on a North Surry false start and the Elks opted for another punt. Coach Tony Duncan glanced over at Coach wood and asked, "Coach, you sure you want them to punt again?"

Elkin would capitalize on the second attempt punt and would block the punt, which Jimmy Wagoner would scoop and score on a 24 yard carry.

Just before the end of the first half, Elkin was plagued with a pair of costly turnovers. The first of which came on an Ethan Creed fumble, which was recovered for a scoop and score by Chance Dobson. Although the Greyhounds missed the PAT, the score held at 13-14, but only for a few minutes, as Elkin fumbled the kickoff.

North Surry would recover the ball on the 32 yard line and would tack on another 7 points after quarterback Tanner Hiatt would find Jonathon Brown in the end zone for a 14 yard pass.

"We had the fumbled ball, and then the kickoff. I was really proud of how the kids bounced back from that," coach Scott Wood said.

Elkin did bounce back, on a 12 play series that ended with an Ethan Kramm two yard TD run, with 7:17 left in the third quarter.

"We went in at the half and we changed the linemen and said, okay, we're going right at them. We ran the same play, probably 10 in a row. We challenged our linemen, and they rose to the occasion," Wood said.

On Elkin's next possession, North Surry forced a fumble, and would capitalize one final time on Elkin turnovers. North Surry marched the ball down the field and finished the drive with a Joston Phipps four yard dive into the endzone.

After an extra point was tacked on, North Surry held a 27-21 lead over Elkin.

During a late push in the fourth, Ethan Creed found Jimmy Wagoner on a 27 yard reception that would breathe life into the Elkin sideline. Facing a ticking clock, offensive options were limited and the Elks were forced to go to the air during what would be their final possession of the game. Three incomplete passes and a short run by Jordan Coe left the Elks just shy of tying the game.

"We got put in a situation at the end where we had to throw the ball, and we couldn't do that," Wood said.

Offensively, Ethan Creed went 4-14 for 57 yards passing. On the ground, Grayson Kimrey touched the ball 14 times for 70 yards, while Ethan Creed had 11 carries for 69 yards. Jordan Coe and Eythan Kramm both stepped up for the Elks as well, with Coe's 10 carries for 42 yards and Kramm went 8-30.

Elkin will have next week off. "We've got an open week, and we're going to work on Elkin High School during the open week to get better," Wood said.
