The Cardinals Landon Walker scored his fourth touchdown of the game from five yards out in overtime to give East the win.

Alex Wilmoth had a hand in three Central touchdowns, including a 65-yard pass to Jesse Martin and a 38-yard touchdown strike to Dillion Carter.

But it was Walker who had the last laugh, and Central coach Monty Southern said the Eagles knew what was coming, just couldn’t stop it.

“They gave it to him a lot and we knew it was coming and most of the time we knew which side it was coming we just couldn’t get enough guys to the point of attack to stop him,” he said. “He ran the ball great but their offensively line played really well.”

After a 23-12 loss to Elkin last week, Southern said before Friday’s game he needed to see improvement from across the board from his squad. After the tough loss, Southern said that had been achieved.

“We played better,” he said. “East Wilkes is a good football team and it was their first home game but we were much better at every spot. Kids played their absolute heart out but we came up just a little bit short on the scoreboard. They made plays in overtime and we didn’t — that is what it boiled down to.”

"Our kids are heartbroken right now we are talking as a coaching staff we know it hurts we’ve all lost games like this like was saying we were better this week than last and oru goal is to get better every week but we're excited about being at home," Southern said.
