The contractor, Court One, will begin the demolition process of the current courts and the preparation for the new court system.
Elkin high school girls tennis season will be at the half-way point," Elkin Town Manager Lloyd Payne said. "The remainder of their matches are scheduled to be played away."
Payne also said there has been no word yet on whether or not the USTA (United States Tennis Association), will give a grant to Elkin.
"We had to answer a few more questions for the USTA, but we have not received word on any grants or any amounts that may be awarded yet," he said.
To date, the private citizen group, Friends of Tennis, has raised $59,500 toward the tennis courts. That amount added to the $75,000 from Surry County, the $50,000 from Elkin City Schools and the $150,000 commitment from the town of Elkin gives us $334,500. Any money from the USTA will reduce the cost from the town."
Court One's original bid came in at $351,334, but was reduced when the town revisited some of the original plans and decided to perform some of the work themselves. The cost of the courts now stands just over $321,000.
