The East Wilkes Cardinals varsity volleyball team blew by Elkin last night, winning three out of four sets.

"I was very, very pleased during the first two games," Cardinal head coach Sheila Holloway said.

East Wilkes came out blazing, winning the first two sets with ease, while dropping the third set to the Buckin' Elks.

"The third game, we relaxed too much. Our serving kind of got a little haywire. We are a short team, and we know that. We have to be much better defensively," Holloway said.

The Cardinals had a rough time keeping up with the Elks during the third set. Lack of communication by the Cardinals played a key part in Elkin's winning of the third set.

"When we're in position and communicating, things went very well," Holloway said.

The Cardinals were able to capitalize on good serves during sets one, two, and four to clinch the win against the Elks. "I was happy with the serving in the first two and last sets, not so much during the third. We just had some miscues," Holloway said.

The Cardinals defense held strong against a close fourth set. Elkin made a late charge at the Cardinals, tightening the score, however, East was able to make a few adjustments and come out on top.

"Because we have to be stronger defensively, I'm asking a lot of the team to step outside of their comfort zone with the way they play defense and thats why sometimes you see little miscues," Holloway said.

With this loss, the Elks fall to 0-2. Their next game will be Thursday against Ashe County at 4:30 p.m.

The Cardinals will travel to Starmount for their game Thursday also starting at 4:30.
