Mis Arados, a Mexican cuisine restaurant, has opened at 544 C. C. Camp Road. The restaurant features unique spices and flavors that are different from the typical Mexican fare.

"Every sauce we serve is made here at the restaurant," Adolfo Torres, manager said. "We use spices specific to the dish. If you order items with chicken at most restaurants, the flavors, or spices are usually the same, just presented differently. Not at Mis Arados. Our dishes are spiced individually. We also make our own chips and salsas, guacamole, and sauces that compliment our food."

Mis Arados is the second restaurant for the Torres family. The original restaurant is located in Sparta and has been a favorite of residents in that area for six years. Adolfo is one of 11 brothers and sisters, but the only one working at the Elkin location.

"We have a large family and all the brothers and sisters work in the Sparta location," Torres said. "We started in the restaurant business when my uncle had a restaurant. I was 11 years old when I first experienced the food industry. After my uncle closed his business a few years later, my father opened our location in Sparta. I took business management classes in school and thoroughly enjoy working in the family business."

The Torres family was thinking about opening a second location when they were approached by the owner of the Elkin shopping center.

"Douglas Spell, the owner of this shopping center came to Sparta and spoke with us about opening a restaurant here in Elkin," Torres said. "There was one empty location here and Spell thought that an additional choice in restaurants would be a good idea for Elkin.

"Since we were considering a second location, we decided to come to Elkin. The people are friendly and the area seems to be growing," he said.

The restaurant is decorated with art deco enameled chairs that depict scenes of Mexico and painted in the rich colors of the earth.

The name Mis Arados was picked in honor of Torres grandfather for his commitment and love of working the land and bringing forth harvest.

"The name Mis Arados means 'My Plow'," Torres said. "We chose the name because of our grandfather. He is one of the people who wants to change the way the land is worked and go back to using the plow, animals and your hands. He believes that the big commercial tractors and machinery is wrong and that the land should be nurtured to bring forth food from the ground."

Mis Arados employs eight individuals from the Elkin area. One employee, a chef, came to the Elkin location with Torres from Sparta.

"I needed one of our chefs to bring our signature flavors to this location," Torres said. "We're looking forward to being a part of the Elkin community and excited to be open here."

Mis Arados is open 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. Friday, 12 p.m. - 11 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Sunday. A lunch menu is served from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Prices for lunch entrees range from $3.75 - $6.95; dinner entrees from $4.25 - $17.95, which is for a dinner for two. A la Carte items and appetizers are available as well as Mis Arados' signature salsa, chips, Pico de gallo and Salsa picosa. 336-258-8258.
