Elkin Tennis starts with a pair of shutouts

The Elkin tennis squad is off to a hot start to for the 2010 season.

The Elks blew past North Wilkes on Monday, shutting them out 9-0. Keeping with that momentum, the Elks, again, shut out Wilkes Central yesterday afternoon.

In singles action on Tuesday, Ashlen Reece took down Candice Hokison convincingly. Reece won 6-2, 6-. Kaylee Brown also won big, defeating Frankie Jane McKinney 6-1, 6-0.

Elizabeth Puckett gave the Eagles their closest game, but fell short of the win. Elkin’s Emma White came up with the win, 7-5, 6-3.

Esther Newmark took down Julianna Franklin 6-2, 6-2, while Sarah Gwyn defeated Mary Hollis 6-1, 6-1.

Mary Taylor defeated Emily Faw to wrap up the singles action, 6-1, 6-1.

For doubles action, only one match was able to be completed before rains canceled the final two.

Kaylee Brown and Asheln Reece won the only doubles match of the evening convincingly, 8-2.

Elkin will host Forbush on Thursday, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
