Next Saturday, Aug. 21, local connoisseurs will enjoy the fourth “Celebrate Elkin” event of 2010, entitled “Celebrate: Our Food & Wine.” Area restaurants and vineyards will be lining Main Street in Elkin to present residents with the finest samples of food, wine and beer on their menus.
However, you need not be a food critic, have written your own cookbook or have made an appearance on Iron Chef to appreciate next week's event.
“Celebrate: Our Food & Wine” will also feature favorites such as home-baked goods from area churches and even ice-cream scooped by Elkin Rotary Club members.
Local musicians BackPorch Bluegrass will also be providing the evening's entertainment under the marquee of the Reeves Theater.
Event co-coordinator Cicely McCulloch said that, just as for the previous “Celebrate Elkin” gatherings this year, she expects a large crowd.
“They've all been successful...We've consistently had between 300-400 people at each event,” said McCulloch. “Four hundred is 10 percent of the town's population. That means (the event) is needed.”
McCulloch added that, while Elkin may need the event, the event is in need of vendors.
“This particular event needed more volunteers to organize it because it will be a more difficult night to pull off – concentrating on food is tough,” said McCulloch. “We need more vendors with food...enough to get a taste of the town.”
Both McCulloch and head “Celebrate Elkin” coordinator Dan Whelan acknowledged that non-profits, including civic groups, church and community organizations, receive free booth space at all “Celebrate Elkin” events. They hope that more church groups and organizations such as the Elkin Farmer's Market will choose to share samples of their food with the town.
“We expect several (civic organizations)...and wineries from the Upper Yadkin Valley Wine Trail...But the more, the merrier,” said Whelan.
