"The tournament ran smoothly," said Recreation Program Supervisor Levi Shore. "We saw some very competitive matches this weekend."
Several local players entered in the tournament and faired well in their age divisions.
Elkin's Jonathan Walker won the Boys 18 division, but his fiercest match came in the semi-final round against Starmount's Corey Campbell.
The two dueled in one of the hardest-fought matches of the weekend, however, Walker prevailed 6-3, 6-4. He went on to win the Boys 18 divison against John Reid, 6-2,6-3.
Elkin's Andrew Reece lost his first match, but rebounded and won the consolation finals 6-3,6-0.
Tyler Macy took first in the Boys 16 divison. Macy defeated Sam McKee in the finals 6-1, 6-1.
Jeremiah Morrison served up an early win against Lucas Shelton, 7-6, 6-3, but eventually fell in the quarterfinals against Sam McKee, 6-1, 6-0.
The Boys 14 division pitted four Elkin players against each other. David Bullin, Chad Vestal, Jacob Lyon, and Andrew Peterson all took part in the Boys 14 division.
Vestal plowed his way to the top, but lost in the finals 6-3,6-2. Bullin lost in the semifinal round to Vestal, 6-4, 6-1, but rebounded for a win in the consolation bracket, defeating Lyon, 6-3, 6-3. He then defeated Barry Hunter 6-4, 6-4.
Peterson, however, had an eventful weekend, participating in both the Elkin Wet Lightning's conference meet in Pilot Mountain, as well as the Myers Junior Open.
After concluding his races at the swim meet, he took on Barry Hunter in the quarterfinals, defeating him 6-1, 6-0, but lost in the semi-final round 6-2, 6-2.
Lyon struggled in the tournament, falling early to Vestal, then again to Bullin, 6-3,6-3, in the consolation bracket.
In the Boys 12 division, Ryan Schell fought all the way to the semifinal round before he was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Matthew Meluch. Ryan Macy also participated in the tournament in the 12 year-old's division.
He was defeated in the quarterfinals by Michael Witmeyer, 6-3, 6-2, and again by Consolation Champion Bryan Wang, 6-1, 6-2.
Kaylee Brown represented Elkin in the Girls 16 division, defeating Meredith Nance early on, 6-1, 6-0, but fell in the semifinal round to Allie Billings 7-5, 6-3.
While the weather was cooperated and yielded clear skies, the players offered fierce competition all weekend without the threat of afternoon storms.
While the USTA has tournaments year-round, Elkin won’t have another until the Futures Tournament in 2011.
