The Elkin Wet Lightning will travel to the Armfield Civic Center in Pilot Mountain for the Blue Ridge Swim League conference meet beginning this afternoon at 4 p.m, and tomorrow at 9 a.m.
"We're excited, we're a bit nervous, but the kids are really excited for the meet," coach Emily Morrison said.
Elkin has led a successful summer campaign through the schedule of meets this summer, winning every meet. While winning is important, teaching techniques and correct form to the kids has been top priority.
"We've seen great strides with our new and younger kids," Morrison said, "All the finer points of technique have been polished."
Proper stroke techniques and learning how to do turns properly have been at the top of the list during practice. The progress the Wet Lightning has made, in all age groups, can be seen in the number of wins and time improvements by each swimmer.
Several swimmers have excelled this summer, and currently stand heads and shoulders above where they began in June.
Brittany Collins finished the 25 Meter Freestyle in June with a time of 30.29, but has since finished with a time of 27.82. Other swimmers making strides of improvement include first year swimmer Isaac Powell, and Camille Walker.
While the 2010 season is coming to an end, each meet has given Elkin swimmers a chance to compete and push themselves to a better personal best.
The 2010 Blue Ridge Swim League conference meet will begin today at 4 p.m. Swimmers ages 11-18 will compete today, and the 10 and under group will compete tomorrow.
