August 7, 2014

Amber Smith, the daughter of Jeff and Becky Smith, joins Montreat from Averett University, where she played softball her freshman and sophomore years. Amber earned USA South Academic All-Conference honors in 2013 and finished the 2014 season hitting .281 for the Cougars. Amber will join the Montreat pitching staff as well as possibly seeing some time at first base.

Smith graduated from Starmount High School in 2012, earning All-State honors at third base her senior year.

Smith’s decision to transfer to Montreat did not come easy. After praying and talking to her parents she reached her decision saying, “I chose Montreat because I really liked the school and the softball coach. She was very welcoming and I liked how she talked about the school and the softball program. I wasn’t part of the team yet, but I still felt like I was at home. I’m beyond blessed to have been given this opportunity and I believe this is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Coach Heather Maston stated, “We are extremely excited to have Amber join our team this season. She is a dedicated, hard-working pitcher that will add strength to our pitching staff and provide strong leadership on and off the field. I believe Amber will come in and begin making an immediate impact with our team.”

Smith is majoring in exercise and sports science and plans to become a physical therapist.
