Local camps and clinics slated

I Support My Community will host a free agility clinic Monday nights through July 28 at the Elkin Municipal Recreation Complex. Youth under 10: 5 to 5:45 p.m.; 10 and older: 6 to 8 p.m.

Participants will report to the open field behind the baseball field at the complex. Farando Best and Elkin Middle School football coach Hagan Miller will be among those on hand to guide those who attend. For more information, contact Best at 734-8978.

Agility and conditioning

A free agility and conditioning camp for Starmount middle schoolers at Starmount High School, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 7. The camp is particularly important for those considering playing football for Starmount Middle School.

There will be no camp on July 29 and 31. For more information, contact Starmount Middle School Coach Michael Vanhoy at 971-5812.


Starmount High School will host its annual Starmount youth football coaches clinic July 27 at 6 p.m. in the library.

All youth coaches that work with Boonville, Jonesville, or West Yadkin youth football are invited to attend. Many topics concerning youth football will be discussed with clinic talks given by Starmount coaches. Refreshments will be provided.

Elkin High School will host a three-day camp for rising freshmen through rising seniors July 28 through 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The camp costs $30. Campers can register on the first day of the camp. T-shirts and lunches are provided. Make checks payable to Elkin High School.

Football practice for the 2014 season begins at 9 a.m. on Aug. 1.


Starmount High School will host its annual youth football camp for kindergartners through sixth-graders on July 28 and 29.

The cost is $10. It will be held on the practice field to the left of the school from 6-8 each evening.

Summer day camp

Elkin Recreation Center. Activities include nature hikes, swimming, weekly movie trips, and educational sessions.

Summer swimming lessons are available through the Elkin Recreation and Parks Department.

Day and evening sessions are available for children 3-5 and 6-12 years old. Registration is available at the Elkin Recreation Center.


East Wilkes High School is holding tennis clinics for ages 7-17 through July 31 on Tuesdays and Thursdays for beginners and advanced players. The beginner clinic will be from 9:30-10:30. The advanced clinic will be from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

The cost of each clinic is $5.00 and no registration is required. All clinics will be led by Coach Aaron Simmons along with former and current players from the East Wilkes tennis program. For questions or more information, call Simmons at 336-927-7391.
