Bubba Bradley hit two home runs, including a first-inning grand slam, as host Elkin defeated Starmount, 19-4, in a Mountain Valley Athletic Conference game Tuesday night.
It was first time he had hit a grand slam or hit two home runs in any game at any level, Bradley said. Bradley added another homer in the second. He walked his last two at bats.
Drew Shinkle also hit a grand slam — the highlight of a 10-run Elkin fourth. Tanner Edwards hit a three-run homer in the second. Edwards’ homer was part one of back-to-back homers with Bradley’s second-inning homer.
The outburst put an exclamation point on a run of recent games where Elkin has scored its highest number of runs and achieved its highest number of hits. The Buckin’ Elks had 13 Tuesday night.
“I don’t have an explanation,” Elkin Coach Steve Martin said. “I think they were all seeing it good tonight.
“Will (Altemueller) struggled a little bit. We struggled a little bit defensively. It was good that we hit.”
Martin said until the last three games, “we couldn’t get the hit when we needed it.”
Altemueller went the distance, allowing eight hits, three earned runs, walking three, and striking out six in five innings.
Of his home runs, Bradley said he didn’t think either of his homers were out of the park. Both were line shots that carried over the wall in right center. “I thought they were just line drives,” Bradley said. “I’m just trying to hit the ball. God just blessed me tonight to hit them.
“I haven’t been hitting that much. I’m just trying to help my team win.”
Seth Haynes and Shinkle both had three hits for Elkin. Shinkle finished his night with five RBI. Edwards and Aaron Sturdivant added two hits for the Buckin’ Elks.
The Buckin’ Elks have scored 40 runs in their last four games while going 2-2. They are 4-13 after Wednesday night’s 12-11 loss to Surry Central in eight innings.
“We’re coming together as a family and a team,” Bradley said. “We’ve got to play defense. We don’t play defense, we don’t win.”
Luke Shore and Zach Freed had two hits for the Rams. Shore, Freed, and Sawyer Davis drove in runs.
