The Foothills Arts Council is set to show an exhibit entitled “Selfies” scheduled to open on April 11, beginning from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

It will be the first time the arts council has held the exhibit, said Director Leighanne Wright.

The director described a “selfie” as a picture taken of oneself, usually done by a cell phone, but also can be done by camera.

Wright said, “We are hoping it will be a lot of fun,” and called the exhibit an opportunity to see how different and unique the form of art can be.

Interest in “selfies” grew after an Australian posted a photo of himself online in 2002 with a busted lip and termed it a “selfie,” said Wright. She hopes for participation from all ages.

“Selfies” for the exhibit must be printed on 3x5, 4x4 or 4x6-sized paper and brought to the arts council from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 7 or April 9, or by 1 p.m. on April 11.

Prizes will be given out to the “best in fun” categories, but the council said, “We aren’t saying what those categories are until the opening.” However, they provided the following clue. “HINT: If you have a selfie with the Eiffel Tower or some such landmark in the background, you might just win one of the categories.”

Refreshments and wine from Elkin Creek Vineyard will be served at the exhibit.

Also on April 7, registration for Foothills Theatre’s Kidshop Theatre begins. Wright said they have not chosen the play to be performed yet.

This will be the fourth year of the theater. There is a limit of participation of 25 children, so it is important to sign up soon if interested, said Wright. The age requirements are 6 and older.

In addition, the three-week summer theater camp will take place at Elkin High School Dixon’s Auditorium from June 9 to June 27, beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing to noon each weekday. The camp culminates in two musical performances on June 27 at 7 p.m. and June 28 at 5 p.m.

Hands-on theater experience is led by director Morgan Harrison with Julie Shaw and Christie Harrison assisting.

The fee for the camp is $75 and is due upon registration. All information and registration forms can be found on the theater’s webpage www.foothillsartscouncil.org/kidshop-theatre-2014.
