JONESVILLE — The Jonesville Police Department responded to a medical distress call that resulted in charges against a mother and her two children for alleged possession of synthetic drugs and paraphernalia. One of the suspects was slapped with child abuse charges for allegedly engaging in drug use with her two minor children within close proximity.
The trio charged are disputing the matter.
The incident happened on March 19 at 110 Cherry St.
“We were called to the scene because one of the residents was experiencing an elevation in his heart rate,” said a spokesperson with the Jonesville Police Department.
After police investigation, Debra Ann Vanleer, 47, of 129 W. Main St., was charged with possession of synthetic cannabinoid, and equipment/paraphernalia.
John Arthur Burke, 18, of 110 Cherry St., was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of synthetic cannabinoid, and resist, obstruct and delay.
Shannon Nicole Kiger, 27, of 110 Cherry St., was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of synthetic cannabinoid and two counts of child abuse.
Vanleer said that her son, John (Burke), was experiencing a seizure and needed medical attention.
“Police came in and threw a bunch of false charges,” said Vanleer.
Kiger said that she is the mother of two boys, ages 4 and 1.
According to Kiger, the 4-year-old was asleep in a bedroom and her infant was in his crib.
“Nobody was using drugs,” said Kiger.
Synthetic cannabis is a psychoactive designer drug created by spraying natural herbs with synthetic chemicals that, when consumed, produce psychoactive effects similar to the effects of cannabis. It is often known by the brand names K2 and Spice, both of which are genericized trademarks used for any synthetic cannabis product. Synthetic cannabis is often termed spice product.
Effective July 1, 2013, House Bill 213 was passed and made all synthetic cannabinoids unlawful in North Carolina.
The trio have a court date scheduled for July 23.
