In Ronda, Zach West raced home with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as East Wilkes downed visiting North Stokes, 2-1, Monday.
With the scored tied 1-1, West doubled to start the inning with a double. Chandler Bare walked and H.N. Patten bunted them over to second and third. With one out, Zach Crabb was intentionally walked to load the bases.
After Levi Ray struck out, Jack McCoy grounded to third, but the throw to first was errant and the Cardinals had their first win of the season.
“You put it in play, good things can happen,” East Wilkes Coach Todd Welborn said.
Welborn said West “pitched a really good ballgame.” West went 5.1 innings before giving way to Crabb with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth. North Stokes failed to make contact on a suicide squeeze play and Crabb struck out the next batter to end the inning.
“We’re in ballgames,” Welborn said. “We just got to make the routine plays.
“We got the first [win]. Now we can build on it.”
