The Yadkin Valley Garden Club celebrated its 81st birthday on Thursday afternoon by honoring one of its longest serving members, Bonnie Hall Stuart of Elkin.

At the ceremony, Stuart also was celebrating her 81st birthday.

“I went to the district meeting and I know we are the oldest (garden club) in the state, but it’s really an honor to present to you with this gift,” said Carol Jernigan, president of the Yadkin Valley Garden Club, to Stuart.

After opening the gift and examining it, Stuart looked up at all the members joining her for the occasion and said, “It’s a lifetime membership.”

“In all of our years, I do not think we’ve ever had one (lifetime membership), but this is well deserved,” said Jernigan.

Stuart said that she has been an active member of the club since 1968.

“That’s a lot of years here. My grandmother lived here. My husband is from here,” said Stuart.

She is married to Dr. Hal Stuart, a retired physician in family practice.

“We started dating in high school,” said Dr. Stuart, chuckling.

As far as turning 81, Bonnie Stuart said age was just another number and she was happy to gather with friends in her home through a club she enjoys.

As far as receiving the lifetime member award, Stuart said, “It means a lot to me.”
