Cardinals Fall to Hawks

HAYS - Leah Bishop had 26 points and 15 rebounds as West Wilkes defeated turnover-plagued East Wilkes, 72-41, in a Mountain Valley Athletic Conference semifinal game at North Wilkes High School Wednesday afternoon.


The Hawks led 19-8 after the first quarter and 44-10 at the half as East Wilkes committed 18 of their 32 turnovers.


The Cardinals didn’t quit, forcing 15 turnovers and outscoring the Hawks 31-28 in the second half. ShaNisha White had four steals and five of her seven points in the third quarter. Jada McCrimmon, before fouling out with 2:38 left in the game, had four steals and nine of her team-high 11 points in the fourth quarter.


The Hawks’ biggest lead came with 1:44 to play in the third quarter at 57-15. After McCrimmon scored with 3:37 left in the game, the Cardinals were within 27 at 65-38.


Bishop did her damage inside, scoring 18 points in the first half. If she missed a shot, he usually had the rebound and the putback.


The Cardinals came into the week with a five-game winning streak. They’ll now have to regroup after a one-win, two-loss week. East Wikes awaits the announcement of the pairings for the state tournament Saturday. Their opening game will be Monday.


West Wilkes will meet North Wilkes, a 57-42 winner over Wilkes Central, for the conference championship tonight at 6:30 at North Wilkes.
