DOBSON — The fifth annual Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention will be held on March 28-29 at Surry Community College in Dobson. The event is co-sponsored by the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The convention celebrates Surry County’s heritage in old-time music, with events including dance and instrument competitions, folk song and band contests, workshops, cake walks, Luthier displays and dining taking place at The Knights Grill.

On Friday, a square dance competition will kick off the convention beginning at 7 p.m with music by Slate Mountain Ramblers, Mountain Park Old Time Band, and Back-Step.

On Saturday, adult and youth competitions will last the entire day with contest registration beginning at 10 a.m.

Misty Matthews, office and tourism manager for the Yadkin Valley Chamber, said the Elkin-headquartered chamber has been a convention sponsor from the beginning, working in conjunction with the Dobson division of the chamber. Matthews said she will be registering participants at 9 a.m. in the gymnasium on Friday and Saturday.

Matthews said the Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention continues to grow and last year hosted close to 500 people.

“It is really nice to see them all out in the courtyard, creating. It is amazing to see the young children come in and play the old-time music, even young people in their 20s and 30s. Every generation is represented at this event,” she said.

In addition to manning registrants, Matthews said the Yadkin Valley Chamber will act as judges, stage hands and volunteer wherever needed. Chamber Champions are businesses who have sponsored every year and will be heavily involved.

There is a $5 admission fee to attend. Children ages 12 and younger will be admitted free of charge.

Prizes totaling $5,000 will be awarded, and the amounts for each competition along with rules are found at www.surryoldtime.com.
