Elkin varsity fencing team will host a Mountain conference dual meet with Salem Academy, Elkin High School, Bishop McGuiness, Morehead High School, Carlisle Prep School and Reynolds High School from the North Carolina High School Fencing League on Saturday.
The meet will be from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Carpenter Gymnasium. The varsity will fence in one area and junior varsity will fence in another area of the gym floor.
Elkin has fielded a varsity team for eight years, with Walter Triplett as head varsity coach. The teams are allowed to start with a team of three and will have substitutes.
Triplett said quite a rivalry exists between Elkin (1A), Morehead (3A) and Bishop. They are one game ahead at 8-2, with both the other rival schools at 7-3.
Elkin and Bishop have been fighting for championships for years, said Triplett with Elkin having the most in Triplett’s coaching. They have won six state championships and finished second in the state twice.
Triplett won the state championship in 1973 while fencing at UNC-Chapel Hill on the varsity first team where he fenced for four years.
The Elkin High School team consists of Matthew Schumak, captain ; Lindsey Shinkle, sophomore; Dudley Dakota-Doss and Drake Bogart, both freshmen; and Senior Abigail Triplett.
Abigail Triplett won the women’s high school champion in the sixth grade her first time in the league in individuals.
“I give a tip of the hat to the Elkin School Board for their far-sightedness in making this a full varsity sport on an equal footing with football and basketball so that the kids could have their participation officially on their high school transcripts,” said Triplett.
The Elkin team championship meet will be held on Feb. 8, and the individual championship will be Feb. 22.
There are 12 teams participating from across the state — and one from Virginia — in the North Carolina High School Fencing League.
The state is divided into two conferences, Mountain and Coastal.
