The town of Elkin was selected into the final round of Budget Travel “Coolest Town” for 2014 competition.

A total of 15 contenders, which stretch from upstate New York to Hawaii, now will rely on online votes to make the top 10.

Budget Travel writes, “Here, you’ll find just about every outdoor activity you might like, including hiking, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, bird watching, and cycling. But when you’re ready to relax after a day in the wild, the town’s galleries, historic sites, shops, theaters, wine trails, and restaurants will make you feel that you’re in a town more than twice the size.”

“We are very excited Elkin and the community are further being considered for this Budget Travel award. The Elkin community got behind this competition, and rightly so. Elkin has so many great attributes and so many wonderful things going for it now — and moving into the future. Not only are we located in a desirable place to live, with real opportunities here, and an award winning school system, residents also note the real quality of life benefits of this community. The whole package is here really, and we’d be thrilled if Elkin is awarded a Coolest Town designation,” said Leslie Schlender of the town of Elkin’s economic development department.

According to Budget Travel, votes may be cast on its website at www.budgettravel.com. Facebook users may post a link to the competition and share with their friends. Each person may vote once per day.

“In order to prevent robo-voting and make the outcome as fair as possible, our system allows one vote per 24 hours per IP address. Please note that buildings such as libraries, homes and offices may have only one IP address for the whole network. While this is not a perfect system, experience has taught us that it will result in the fairest possible outcome,” said Budget Travel on its website.
