Elkin City Schools Board of Education recognized several high school students and a coach Monday during the regular monthly meeting.
Principal Joel Hoyle of Elkin High presented two groups for recognition during the board’s “board spotlight” portion of the meeting.
Laken Lloyd, Aspen Jackson and Nicole Defreitas were honored for their selection in the Mars Hill University Choral Festival.
The festival has more than 300 students scheduled to participate. More than 700 students auditioned in October for the Feb. 7-8 concert, with representatives from about 100 high schools.
Hoyle then presented women’s golf coach Sena Hinson to the board.
Hinson has been with the school system for more than a decade, coaching in both the middle and high school before taking over the women’s golf program.
This year she was named Coach of the Year for women’s golf.
Hoyle then brought up the women’s golf team, fresh off their success at the state championships.
The team finished third in this year’s State 1A/2A championship.
Annika Winebarger finished first in the state and Mary Frances Hall tied for second.
Winebarger, Hall and Palmer Duncan were able to attend and be photographed with Hoyle and Hinson.
Kaley Cornelison was unable to attend.
