Santa Claus announced a time change to his participation for the Dec. 6 Light Up Night.

For the last eight years, Dave George has volunteered as Santa and has gathered children on Light Up Night for a biblical-influenced reading on the birth of Jesus Christ. Santa also sings traditional Christmas songs with the children.

The widely popular event showcases George, who also serves as Light Up Night’s most popular photo opportunity.

“For me, I believe Christmas is about the birth of Jesus,” said George. “I like reading about Christmas and Jesus to the children. It’s become too convenient to let Jesus sit at the bottom of the list and eliminate the real meaning of Christmas.

“Light Up Night is not about lighting up a bulb. For me, Christmas is about Jesus,” he said.

Keeping with an Elkin tradition, Santa will gather with children and families at 5:45 p.m. The gathering will be outside the Reeves Theater.

Santa was originally scheduled for an appearance at the Liberty after 6 p.m.

“Santa will be seen walking throughout Main Street from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. giving out candy. Santa is part of the official program which now begins at 5:45 p.m. at the Reeves,” said Irwin.

George indicated that he will need to depart Light Up Night after his presentation to the children because he serves as chairman of the New Hope Pregnancy Board and it has its Christmas party in Yadkinville.

“I’ll be driving to that event dressed in my Santa suit,” said George, chuckling.
