Black Friday sales are on the horizon, but some local merchants are opting to start the holiday spree on Thursday. One store is even giving away an automatic $1,000 shopping spree.

“We’re giving gift cards to the first 250 shoppers who arrive on Thursday at 8 p.m. One of the gift cards will be a $1,000 prize. Each Belk store is giving away the same amount,” said Patricia Faw, assistant store manager for Belk.

The Belk associate said the biggest attention grabber this season are ladies’ Rampage boots. The footwear is going for $19.99 a pair.

“We’re starting our holiday sale at 6 p.m. on Thursday. We’ll have another sale offer at 8 p.m. Then we get ready for Friday at 8 a.m.,” said Trent Holbrook, store manager for the Elkin Walmart.

Trying to decipher between all the sales offered by the giant retail store requires looking through 42 pages filled with sales. Holbrook said to prepare the store has more than 300 pallets of merchandise in the store.

For Walmart, the featured item for 6 p.m. Thursday is a 32-inch LED television for $98. At 8 p.m., the store will offer a 50-inch television for $288.

Twenty additional items will be on sale at 8 a.m. that have a one-hour guarantee, according to the store manager.

“If you’re here and want one of the items within the hour, you get it,” said Holbrook.

Big Lots located at 1540 N. Bridge St. is instead opening at 6 a.m. to help shoppers take advantage of some of its sales.

“We’ll have a wide variety of sales going on in the store,” said Kevin Lausch, associate manager for Big Lots. “We have recliners for $188 on sale, and android tablets by Emerson are going $48.88.”
