BOONVILLE — With two games remaining in the Mountain Valley Conference schedule, the race for the crown has heated up.

Five teams remain within striking distance, with Ashe County (6-3, 5-0) leading the pack as the only unbeaten squad. North Wilkes (7-2, 4-1) and Starmount (6-3, 4-1) sit one game back, while Elkin (6-3, 3-2) and Alleghany (5-4, 3-2) are still in the hunt two games back.

The Rams can shake up the standings tonight when they travel to West Jefferson to take on the Huskies in their final road game in a critical match-up.

The Buckin’ Elks will look to knock the Trojans from the race when the 1A rivals square off at Grissom Stadium on Senior Night.

After losing to Ashe County in last week’s battle of unbeatens, the Vikings will try to bounce back this week against West Wilkes (2-7, 0-5) at home.

To round out the league schedule, East Wilkes (0-9, 0-5) takes on county rival Wilkes Central (1-8, 1-4) on Senior Night in Ronda.

In Western Piedmont Conference action, Forbush returns home for the last time to take on Surry Central on Senior Night.

All games kick off at 7:30 p.m.
