Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church will soon be screening a Kirk Cameron movie in Elkin High’s Dixon Auditorium.
Cameron’s new “Unstoppable,” a movie answering where God is during tragedy and suffering, will be shown Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
Pleasant Ridge’s mission team is hosting the event in an effort to teach people that, even through difficult times, God is in control and cares.
“We believe that this movie will do many things for the people in our community,” the church’s Senior Pastor Mitch Smith said. “Not only will people be able to make connections and realize that this is a question most people have and face at some point, but we are hoping through the exploration and journey that Kirk Cameron takes he will help people to overcome their questioning.”
Cameron’s movie is said to have been inspired by the death of his close friend from cancer at the age of 15. The film received widespread attention when it was banned from both Facebook and YouTube.
Fan outrage eventually led to both websites lifting the ban. Facebook said the domain name used by the film had previously been listed as spam. YouTube did not comment.
Pleasant Ridge’s mission team is inviting the public to the free event, with a special emphasis on other churches. Smith said the church hopes to bring all churches in the area together to focus on serving God, but also to invite the unsaved.
“We most definitely invite believers and church goers to come to this event, but we also feel that there is a lost community in Elkin that is primarily lost because they do not understand where God is during these times of tragedy and suffering,” Smith said.
The auditorium seats 750 and the organizers hope to fill every seat. At the end of the movie, the organizers will invite attendees to join together at an altar call.
The event is free, but a donation will be taken up for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Snacks will be available for donations to Lottie Moon as well.
