The Elkin Public Library is kick-starting a new marketing campaign today at the Elkin vs. Alleghany football game during halftime after the Senior Night festivities.

The program, Geek the Library, is a national campaign underwritten by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is being held throughout the Northwest Regional Library system with Elkin kicking it off first.

During the football game, local teens will be handing out stickers and bookmarks, and there will be an announcement over the PA system. In addition, a large banner will be displayed on the field during the program kickoff.

Librarian Martha Smith said in the coming months she will be presenting the Geek the Library program at various civic organizations and the town of Elkin.

According to information on geekthelibrary.org, the “campaign grabs people’s attention and serves as a reminder about the immense value public libraries have for individuals and for communities. The campaign introduces the word ‘geek’ as a verb and illustrates the fact that everyone is passionate about something — everyone ‘geeks’ something — and that the public library supports it all.”
