MOUNT AIRY — East Wilkes breezed through the Mountain Valley Conference unbeaten to capture its second-straight tennis title.

But one team had the Cardinals’ number all year — Mount Airy.

After handing East two of its four losses on the season, the Granite Bears ended the Cards’ championship dreams this week with a 6-0 victory in the third round of the 1A dual-team state playoffs.

Mount Airy, which advanced to the state title match a year ago, swept East Wilkes in straight sets to advance.

Davi Barbour knocked off No. 1 ShaNisha White 6-0, 6-1 before Haley Thomas downed Molly Callaway 6-2, 6-0. Bree Hughes blanked Kennedy Lester 6-0, 6-0, while Carley VanHoy battled past McKenzie Stokes 6-3, 6-3 in the tightest match of the day.

Jai Daniels topped Kayle Pardue 6-1, 6-1 before Bailey Jackson completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Abby Burchette.

The Bears advance to play East Montgomery in the fourth round.

The loss ended East Wilkes’ impressive 15-4 season.
