MOUNT AIRY — The Foothills Arts Council is one of seven Surry County arts organizations to receive part of $9,071.50 in grant funding from the Surry Arts Council. These funds represent 50 percent of the total North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Grant allocation to Surry County.

Since 1977, the North Carolina Arts Council’s Grassroots Arts Program has provided North Carolina citizens access to quality arts experiences. Using a per capita based formula, the program provides funding for the arts in all 100 counties of the state through partnerships with local arts councils. Surry Arts Council serves as the North Carolina Arts Council’s partner in awarding subgrants to local organizations for arts program in Surry County.

Applications were available for non-profit organizations whose purposes are to promote and develop diverse cultural arts programming in Surry County. Funding priority is given to qualified arts organizations (theaters, galleries, choral societies, festivals) and other community organizations that provide arts programs in the county. Funded projects will occur between Oct. 1, 2013, and May 31, 2014.

Foothills Arts Council received $3,471.50 to support its operating and program budget and marketing.

Other organizations receiving funding include the Mount Airy Downtown Business Association receiving $1,000 for marketing and promotion of the 2013 Downtown Holiday Art Walk and the 2014 third annual Downtown Mount Airy Art Walk; the Good Times Drama Club received $600 for the support of free theatrical performances for the community; the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History received $1,000 to support a free community presentation by Mike Wiley; the Mount Airy Photography Club received $1,000 for free community presentations by professional photographer(s); Veterans Memorial Park, Inc. received $1,000 to offer Old-Time Music and Dance workshops and jams with award-winning Surry County musicians and dancers during the Mount Airy Fiddlers Convention; and Voce, an auditions chorale, received $1,000 for artists’ fees for its community concerts.

Grant applications were evaluated by a panel of community members and voted on by the Surry Arts Council Board of Directors at its September meeting. For questions or more information, contact Surry Arts Council at 786-7998 or email arts@surryarts.org.
