BOONVILLE — Three Mountain Valley Conference teams enter Week Nine unbeaten.
But only two will stay that way after Friday night action.
With Ashe County (4-3, 3-0 MVAC) looking to stay perfect down the road at East Wilkes, the top two teams in the conference will square off in Boonville, as North Wilkes (6-1, 3-0) and Starmount (5-2, 3-0) clash in a marquee match-up.
The Vikings and Rams have been the class of the league this season through nine weeks, winning all three of their respective conference games by 14 points.
North’s lethal aerial attack has put up an impressive 133 points in the first three games, including 48 points against both Alleghany and East Wilkes, while allowing just 59 points.
Starmount’s stingy defense has powered the team to a 3-0 start, giving up just 16.3 points per game in league play. But not to be outdone, the Rams have racked up 117 points in those games, including back-to-back 40 points performances against West Wilkes and Wilkes Central.
The winner will remain in the hunt for a conference title with Ashe County looming down the stretch.
Elsewhere, the Buckin’ Elks will look to carry the momentum of last week’s wild come-from-behind victory over East Wilkes into Millers Creek tonight against West Wilkes.
Elkin is one of three squads with one win in league play and will take on a desperate Blackhawk club looking for their first victory.
In Moravian Falls, the surprising Trojans of Alleghany will look to continue their strong season against reigning conference champion Wilkes Central.
Alleghany sits in the middle of the pack at 3-4 and 1-2, while the Eagles are treading water at 1-6 and 1-2.
All games kick off at 7:30 p.m.
