A wreck that saw one woman airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Friday also saw two more treated at Baptist.
Four people total were injured in a wreck on I-77’s northbound bridge over the Yadkin River.
One was taken from the scene by helicopter, two were taken by ambulance to Baptist, and the fourth was treated at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.
The Cadillac car that came to rest on the bridge reportedly rear-ended the Honda Civic that stopped just shy of the bridge against the median guardwire.
According to a spokeswoman from the Highway Patrol division station in Elkin, the cause of the wreck was labeled as failure to reduce speed.
The Honda was attempting to change lanes when the Cadillac hit it in the rear-end. After impact, the Honda traveled off the roadway to the left and hit a cable in the median.
The Cadillac traveled off the roadway to the right, then off the roadway to the left and struck the bridge face on the left side of the roadway.
The Cadillac then crossed the roadway to the right and hit the bridge face, coming to rest in the left lane.
The Cadillac was the vehicle charged with failure to reduce speed.
No other vehicles were involved, but traffic was backed up for miles down the interstate.
The wreck occurred shortly before noon Friday.
A helicopter was flown in and landed above the wreck on the two northbound lanes. First responders from CC Camp and Arlington volunteer fire departments worked to move the injured female from the bridge and place her in an ambulance to travel the distance between the wreck and the airlift.
There was some concern over which department would handle the wreck. One vehicle came to rest on the bridge — the bridge and river act as the county line between Yadkin and Surry counties.
State troopers came from as far away as Mount Airy, but eventually it was decided the Yadkin division would handle it since the other vehicle was located on the Yadkin side and the wreck began there.
