ELKIN — Headlining the third week of Mountain Valley Conference action is a championship game rematch between Starmount and Wilkes Central in Moravian Falls.
The Eagles stunned the Rams, 14-7, in the regular-season finale a year ago to clinch the league title and end Starmount’s four-year reign in the area.
The Rams (4-2, 2-0) will no doubt have revenge on their minds tonight when they head back up to Moravian Falls.
The match-up has lost most of its luster with Central on a downward spiral this season, sitting near the bottom of the standings at 1-5 (1-1) on the year.
Meanwhile, Starmount has found its groove after two non-conference losses, notching its third-straight victory last week against West Wilkes, 40-21.
In Elkin, the Buckin’ Elks return to the field looking to bounce back from back-to-back conference losses when rival East Wilkes (0-6, 0-2) comes to town tonight.
Elkin (3-3, 0-2), coming off a heart-breaking loss to North Wilkes, hosts the winless Cardinals in the Battle of the County line at Grissom Stadium.
In West Jefferson, Ashe County (3-3, 2-0) squares off with West Wilkes (2-4, 0-2) riding a three-game winning streak.
The Huskies are flying high after blowing out Wilkes Central last week and will look to keep pace with front-runner North Wilkes in the conference standings as one of the three unbeaten squads.
In Hays, the first-place Vikings (5-1, 2-0) host up-start Alleghany in marquee match-up.
The Trojans (3-3, 1-1) battled past East Wilkes last week in an impressive offensive showing, cruising to the 40-28 win.
In Western Piedmont Conference action, Forbush hits the field against South Stokes in its first-ever league game in the newly-formed conference.
The Falcons finished their non-conference slate with an even 3-3 mark as East Bend is buzzing with the club.
All games kick off at 7:30 p.m.
