Elkin’s downtown merchants have announced its business champion.
Commissioner Cicely McCulloch was selected as Elkin’s Main Street Champion for 2013.
“I’m so honored and happy about it,” said McCulloch. “The award follows an outstanding amount of people who received the award, too.”
Elkin has been a member of the North Carolina Main Street Program for more than a decade. Each year, the Downtown Merchants, Inc. members can choose to select an individual, a couple, business partners, or a civic entity to be awarded as a Main Street Champion who has made a significant contribution to the success of the local downtown and are instrumental in downtown revitalization.
According to Teresa Ray, chair of the Main Street Advisory Board, McCulloch was chosen this year for many reasons. McColloch has been involved with the downtown for many years. She has been a downtown business owner since 1993 and has been actively involved with the Downtown Merchants Association and the Main Street Advisory Board. She has also striven to keep the dream of the Reeves Theater renovation moving forward over the years, and assisted with fundraisers such as the Haunted Reeves and Reevestock events.
“Her vision for Elkin’s downtown expanded further over the past two years with the renovation of The Liberty, which was an old tobacco warehouse and Cash n Carry that sat empty for years. She took on a huge challenge and renovated this old abandoned building into a beautiful and relevant multi-purpose building that has brought new life to East Main Street,” said Ray.
“Cicely McCulloch’s dedication to Main Street has been proven year after year with her foresight, ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit. She is well deserving of this award for Main Street Champion,” said Laura Gaylord Main Street and community manager for the town of Elkin.
McCulloch will be recognized and presented with a certificate of appreciation commemorating this honor at the North Carolina Main Street Annual Awards Reception and Ceremony in New Bern on Jan. 30, 2014.
