BOONVILLE - In a rematch of last year’s thrilling five-game match in the 2A state playoffs, Starmount and North Surry squared off again Saturday in a tri-match in Mount Airy.
And like last season, the Greyhounds came out victorious as North held on for another wild five-game triumph, winning 15-25, 25-18, 27-25, 25-27, 15-12.
Hunter Welborn was dominant in the losing effort, recording an astonishing 27 kills, while adding 12 blocks and nine digs, just missing out on a triple-double. Haley Hartman tallied 17 kills of her own with 24 digs, two block and two aces as the Rams’ 1-2 punch.
Erin Barr recorded 41 assists, eight digs, six blocks and five kills, while Ashley Johnson added nine digs and two kills. Alli St. John and Alli Jones combined to go 41-for-43 from behind the service line to lead the Rams.
Starmount bounced back from the hard-fought loss to sweep 3A McMichael, 28-25, 27-25, 25-14.
Welborn once again powered the Rams with 16 more kills, six blocks and five digs, while Hartman added nine kills, three aces and three digs.
Barr tallied 36 additional assists with five digs and three aces against the Phoenix. Jones went 12-for-12 on serves with four digs and two kills, while Johnson was 12-for-12 behind the line with five kills, four digs and three blocks.
St. John recorded five kills and five blocks, while Rachel Castevens added two kills and two digs.
Starmount improved to 11-4 overall on the season, including a perfect 5-0 mark in Mountain Valley Conference play.
The Rams also swept North Wilkes (25-8 25-18 25-12), Ashe County (25-9-25-8-25-5) and Alleghany (25-19 25-11 25-15) in league action.
