A small water leak on E. Main Street the size of a pinhole on Saturday has grown into the size of a quarter by Tuesday morning.
The water has been continuously running curbside along the south side of E. Main Street in downtown Elkin heading east.
The leak is located at 122 E. Main St. adjacent to Chill on Main, a downtown eatery that is dependent on having adequate running water for its restaurant.
According to a town employee, representatives for Chill on Main expressed concern about the leak.
The water leak was reported to town officials on Saturday.
As of Tuesday afternoon and when asked to estimate how much water was coming out of the hole, a Public Works employee for the Town of Elkin stated that it’s “probably 5 gallons a minute or more.”
The Town of Elkin Public Works Department reported that the department is in the process of notifying other utility companies who handle power and sewer prior to digging.
Officials are unable to determine the cause of the leak until they dig a hole and investigate.
