Mayor Lindbergh Swaim of Jonesville has died.
The multiple-term mayor suffered from an extensive illness. Mayor Swaim had opted not to seek an additional term as mayor.
Mayor Swaim is credited for establishing the Jonesville Fire Department, the former Jonesville Lions Club and the Lila Swaim Park.
For the Jonesville Fire Department, Mayor Swaim was assistant chief when the department was formed in 1958 and became chief the next year, serving from 1959 to 2002.
Swaim was also a member of the Jonesville Historical Committee. He was a member of the Jonseville First United Methodist Church.
Mayor Swaim is entrusted to Elkin Funeral Service. Official services are developing.
Elkin Mayor Lestine Hutchens said she was saddened when learning of the death.
“Jonesville lost a very dedicated public servant. It’s very hard to replace someone with as much dedication and commitment,” said Mayor Hutchens.
“Sincere condolences to the Swaim family and the town of Jonesville. Lindbergh’s presence will be missed in places other than the Town Hall,” said Judy Wolfe of the Jonesville Historical Society.
“What a legacy Lindbergh leaves behind. We have all been blessed by his being a part of our lives. We are praying for your comfort and peace,” wrote Todd & Cricket Gilliam on Mayor Swaim’s developing obituary page.
