ELKIN - Elkin’s soccer and volleyball squads dropped tough season-opening contests at Northwest Conference powerhouses Monday night.
In soccer, the Buckin’ Elks allowed five first-half goals, falling 5-0 to a solid Surry Central squad in Dobson.
Oscar Valle had an impressive outing for the Golden Eagles, netting all five goals to power Central to the victory. Francisco Rangle set up two of Valle’s goals, while Adrian Gonzales, Jose Siete and Victor Solis added an assist each.
Seniors Jose Rojas and Daniel Cortez led the Elks with four and three shots on goal, respectively, but were unable to find the back of the net. Jesus Rivera recorded 11 saves in goal for Elkin.
The Elks, coming off a 14-7 season, that included a 10-4 mark in the Mountain Valley Conference, look to capture a league title with eight seniors on their roster.
Surry Central is trying to build on a 17-3-2 campaign with a senior-laden roster as they move into the newly-formed 2A Western Piedmont Athletic Conference.
In volleyball, the Lady Elks were swept by East Surry Monday night in Pilot Mountain.
The Cards jumped out to a 10-2 start in the first game before grabbing a 20-13 lead. East finished things off with a 25-13 victory.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 advantage with a 25-11 triumph in the second game.
In the third round, Elkin grabbed its only lead of the night 2-1 before East Surry cruised to the 25-14 win to complete the sweep.
