‘Warriors for Will’ host blood drive

August 7, 2013

William Ralph Adkins’ family hosted a blood drive Friday through the American Red Cross in his memory.

Adkins was born March 7, 2006 with hypoplastic heart syndrome at Duke Medical Center in Raleigh. He underwent surgery to create a fourth chamber of his heart, but the surgery was not successful.

Adkins passed away on April 1, 2006 in the arms of his mother, Deborah Adkins, while being surrounded by family.

“Will was given countless units of blood during his 25-day journey on Earth, all thanks to generous donors,” according to a press release.

“His parents Jimmy and Deborah Adkins felt that, although they had done other things to raise money, collecting blood via a blood drive would an amazing way to give back,” according to the release.

The drive was held from 3-7:30 p.m. Friday. The family met its goal and collected 42 units of blood with the help of the community and the American Red Cross.

Members of the family said they would like to thank the Red Cross, Domino’s of Yadkinville, Pepsi of Jonesville, Papa John’s of Elkin, Arby’s of Jonesville, First Baptist Church Jonesville, and all the other people who made the blood drive a success.
