“Youth Awareness Day” is coming to downtown Elkin, announced event organizers for I Support My Community, a charitable organization focused on youth development.

The event will be held on Monday, Aug. 12 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 207 E. Main Street in Elkin.

All supporters and volunteers will receive grilled hot dogs, chips, and drinks.

I Support My Community is seeking additional donations for the event.

“We’re seeking community donations for this event. We would like to receive donations of book bags,” said Farando “Sly” Best of the organization.

The book bags will be passed through the organization and delivered to local students in the Elkin and Jonesville area that need backpacks and additional school supplies.

Best is also the owner of Midtown Barber Shop.

Joining Best at the event is Kenneth Abrams, the basketball coach of Elkin High School and Pastor Craig Smith of the Emmanuel Pentecostal Apostolic Church in Pilot Mountain.

“Families, friends, and businesses who make book bag donations are greatly appreciated,” said Abrams. “We’ll even take school supplies to fill the bags. This is something that’s desperately needed.”

Organizers have asked for all donations to be delivered to Midtown Barber Shop by August 9.
