July 2, 2013

Surry Community College is holding an auto maintenance and repair class, but not for your typical candidate.

Marion Venable, public information officer for Surry Community College said the college is looking for women.

“Every girl should know basic auto maintenance and repair! Surry Community College is offering Girl Garage on Monday and Tuesday, July 15 & 16, from 6pm to 9pm, on the Dobson campus. Designed to be both informative and fun, this hands-on class will cover oil change, fluid levels, tire change, proper inflation, and other basic maintenance tasks. Participants will also learn the right questions ask to ensure that they are getting the service they are paying for,” said a release.

“That’s fascinating,” said Mary Walters who was shopping at AutoZone on Bridge Street in Elkin. “I came here today with my dad who teaches me a ton of stuff, but it might be cool for me to go and see what else I can learn.”

According to the college, students will use their own vehicles for a hands-on learning opportunity.

Class cost is $35 and limited to 10 students. For registration information, call (336) 386-3229 or (336) 386-3244.
