ELKIN - After an exciting first round of the Mountain Valley Conference baseball and softball tournaments, the semifinal fields have been set.
In baseball, Wilkes Central, Forbush, West Wilkes and Elkin advanced to the second round of the tourney.
The first semifinal will pit the second-seeded Falcons, who walked off past Ashe County in the first round, against No. 6 Elkin, who upset 1A champ Alleghany to punch their ticket.
Regular-season champion Central will look to take another step towards a tournament title after topping No. 8 East Wilkes Wednesday when they host fourth-seeded West Wilkes, who knocked off Starmount in the opening round, in the second semifinal matchup.
The showdown between Forbush and Elkin kicks off the semifinal double-header tonight at North Wilkes High School at 4:30 p.m. The all-Wilkes County matchup in the second semi starts around 7:30 p.m.
In softball, three Wilkes County clubs (West, East and Central) and Forbush advanced to the next round.
Second-seeded East Wilkes, who blanked No. 7 Starmount in the first round, squares off with No. 3 Forbush, who toppled Ashe County to advance, in the first semifinal.
The second semi features another all-Wilkes matchup as regular-season champion West Wilkes, who no-hit Alleghany Wednesday, battles No. 5 Wilkes Central, who breezed past Elkin in the first round.
Forbush and East Wilkes open the semifinal double-header tonight at Ashe County High School at 4:30 p.m., while West and Central square off at 6:30 p.m.
