This year’s Merlefest is slated to run April 24-28 with a recently announced tribute section to Doc Watson on April 27.
Saturday will be a special evening of honor and remembrance to the late Doc Watson. This will be the first Merlefest since Watson’s passing in May of last year.
“From the beginning, Doc Watson has been the artistic center of this festival,” said Merlefest Director Ted Hagaman. “So for Merlefest 2013, we will come together as a family to pay special tribute to the man and musician who meant so much to us all.”
Saturday’s tribute will be called the “Celebration Jam,” as much a party for Watson as it is a memorial. The evening will be hosted by Sam Bush and will feature many of Doc’s closest musician friends, said a Merlefest press release. The release said the musicians will intermingle Doc’s favorite songs with personal stories of Watson.
In addition, the festival wil have a section of its program dedicated to Watson, video clips throughout the weekend of Watson, and a new display will be unveiled at Lowe’s Hall with a bust of Doc and memorabilia, said the press release.
Merlefest was named for Watson’s late son, Eddy Merle. This year Merlefest will be a musical memorial to both father and son. Doc Watson passed away on May 29 of last year following surgery and a fall, a month after the close of the 2012 Merlefest. He would have been 90 last Sunday, March 3.
