A Surry County building inspector ordered the Reeves Theater sealed off from occupancy pending an official inspection by a structural engineer. The theater is to remain closed barring any occupancy until it’s structure is deemed safe.
Elkin Fire Chief Tommy Wheeler indicated that it’s protocol for the safety and well-being of all to be followed in the accident aftermath.
“My understanding is that the owners have gotten in touch with a structural engineer,” said Chief Wheeler.
The County Inspection’s Department was called onto the scene on Saturday after a vehicle lost control and pummeled into the historic theater.
Richard Collins of the Surry Inspector’s Department temporarily ordered the building sealed off, according to the chief.
The wreck happened at approximately 9 a.m., according to reports.
The driver was not seriously injured in the accident.
Plywood is now covering the opening of the crash site and yellow caution tape prevents pedestrians from accessing the theater.
