Haley M. Sullivan, a 2005 graduate from Elkin High School, is running for a vacant position for Elkin City School Board.
“I decided to run for school board to help be a voice for a population of people in the Elkin City School District that I feel is under represented,” she said. “Through my work and personal life I have met and worked with a diverse population, and I feel that these groups of people should be represented when decisions about their school are being made.”
Sullivan attended Western Carolina University, where she graduated from the honors college with a bachelor’s degree in social work in 2009 and is currently attending the University of New England for her master’s in social work. She now works for Surry County Child Protective Services, completing investigations, family assessments and case management services.
Sullivan said that her daughter, Lilly, has also impacted her decision to get involved with the school system.
“Next year my daughter will begin kindergarten in the Elkin City Schools system, and I want to make sure that she and all the children in our district receive the best education possible to prepare them for a bright future.”
Sullivan will appear on Surry County voter’s ballots along with Richard L. Brinegar. Both are running unopposed. Jim Westbrook and Larry Wagoner are stepping down from their long-time positions on Elkin City School Board.
“I am look forward to the opportunity to serve my community and school district if given the opportunity,” Sullivan said.
