BOONVILLE - At the midway point of their Mountain Valley Conference slate, the Starmount Rams return to the field Friday with a fifth-straight title in their sights.
Unbeaten this year at 6-0 overall and 4-0 in conference action, the Rams hit the home stretch of their season in control of another championship with four games remaining on the schedule.
First up, Starmount travels up the mountain to Millers Creek to take on the top 1A squad in West Wilkes tonight.
The Rams will rely on their lights-out defense, which is allowing just four points per game, to stymie the banged up Blackhawk offensive attack.
At 3-4 on the year and 3-2 in the MVAC, the ‘Hawks are fighting to fend off North Wilkes (3-2) and Elkin (2-2) in the race for the 1A title.
The path for the 2A and overall conference championships heads through Boonville for a fifth-straight season, with the Rams leading second-place Wilkes Central (5-1, 4-0) in the standings by virtue of overall records. Starmount and Central square off on the seasons’ final night - October 26 in Moravian Falls.
In Elkin, the Buckin’ Elks responded from the Battle of the Bridge loss in a big way, spoiling West Wilkes’ Homecoming with a crucial 35-21 1A win last Friday.
Elkin returns to the field with two-straight 1A matchups against North Wilkes and Alleghany the next two weeks.
The Elks host the Vikings tonight at Grissom Stadium for Homecoming in the first of those meetings.
Josh Strickland and the Elkin offense clicked on all cylinders against West and will look to continue that success against North tonight.
In Ronda, East Wilkes hosts Wilkes Central after a disappointing outing up the mountain in Alleghany last Friday.
Coming off a huge Homecoming win over North a week earlier, the Cards (1-4) stumbled against the Trojans, dropping further back in the conference race.
Forbush is idle this week.
All games around the Yadkin Valley kick off at 7:30 p.m.
